I had this error upgrading from Windows 7 Pro SP1 bit. Here is the fix I came up with which worked for me so I decided to share it here. A few things first:. Check the Hide all Microsoft Services box. When your computer reboots, do not enable anything if you are asked like antivirus software, etc. Delete those as well if they are there. More than likely you will want the bit one, but there is a bit option. Do not mount it as the computer will reboot so the mount will not work.
When asked to enter a Windows license, click the Skip button. The current license will later be converted to and activated on Windows 10 automatically. The "Something happened" is a known issue with a fix coming because you have a language pack installed.
I work on at MSFT on OS Upgrade, but please no personal requests for tech support. It says something about mail. Microsoft error messages infuriate me. In the installation media software for Window 7, 10 and presumably 8. There is absolutely no indication where these logs are, let alone a link to them. I just cannot fathom how Microsoft is still profitable when they do shit like this. The trigger for the purple box "Something Happened" is due to language but the trigger for the other one I believe is unknown.
Seems the language one is quite common but I am getting the little grey box "something happened" and have tried everything I could think of to no avail. I actually tried a fresh install of 7 and then tried the upgrade again only to get the same damn error. Since I had already formatted, I went ahead and installed 10 without a key you can use it for a month before activating and I am going to wait a few weeks for them to fix bugs, then install 7 again and try to upgrade.
I tried it multiple times after trying every trick I found online and no luck. Today, I got a pop-up from Microsoft stating that my reserved copy is now ready. I figured it would be the same crap but went ahead and tried it. It downloaded Win 10 in the background and asked to install, I said yes. It rebooted the machine and started installing. I figured no way it would complete without an error but it did! Currently running Windows 10 flawlessly!
Thanks for the heads up. After I read your comment I put 7 back on and waited for the prompt. Once it showed up, it was a totally different update process than using the media creation tool and it actually worked. I am activated genuine on 10 now.
I reserved it the same day Microsoft pushed it out which I think was around the first of June. I got the office download notification 10 days after the official release.
I know this is old, but FWIW, the issue with mine was pending updates when I was trying to install from a USB stick. I had to unplug from network, stop the update service, clear update cache, start the update service, and then ran upgrade again without connecting to the network. Anyway, I fixed it by rebuilding my BCD - boot configuration data.
Well, after 3 days and dozens of attempted upgrades, I tracked it down to a slightly corrupt BCD. I eventfully installed Visual BCD and it had a loader listed dupe of my recovery partition that when I tried to get info on, crashed the app.
Thankfully Visual BCD let me remove it. No problem, if my write-up resulted in one person having slightly less painful experience, then it was worth the time to do it. I also did change the language and region preferences, and deleted the temp windows BT,WS folders, and win 10 installed without a hitch. I had high hopes from this however it too as rest of the suggestions have failed. Worst windows install experience ever! Finally after fighting for two days the fight is won.
Installing win 10 for the first time on vacation on an old mini pc with Win 7 Stater and a very unstable 5 Mbit line was frustrating. Thank you this thread and thank you reddit! You certainly saved my day! Now i have Windows 10! I had exactly the same problem.
Fixed it by rebuilding BCD - boot configuration data. You can find numerous tutorials on how to do that in the Internet, installation failed with error 0x80070002 что делать.
However keep in mind that the process is slightly different for EFCI boot mode and legacy boot mode. Just in case, here is the instruction that I followed. Now, it should say something like "completed successfully".
The new BCD is ready, close Command Prompt and restart your computer. I just recently did a fresh install of 7. All updates are installed Windows Updates anyway, optional and requiredand I have barely any programs. Running 7 SP1 64 bit, and just got the OK to download Windows NO other removable storage on my PC disk, USB, etc no partitions, etc.
I also JUST tried to media creation tool, and it gives the same error. I even tried mounting the ISO and I still cant get it to install. I still get the "Something Happened" message and my languages have never not been set to En US. What am I doing wrong???? Do you know if updated versions of setup are downloaded if you allow downloading updates? I have installed the English language pack and changed my region to English US and yet it does not work.
Thanks for the help. This worked for me after I tried a bunch of other possible solutions. Erm didnt really help it just did those dots around then the purple thing just closed nothing happened after?
When it happened to me, the problem was my SSD had enough space for the download, but not enough for the install. I had the same issue and I tried all the instructions mentioned above, and none of them worked. Then on one system, I removed it from the Domain, and downloaded the tool again and the installation went smooth without any errors. This worked for me all the way up to the end when I do MSConfig and try to switch it back to normal boot. It crashes when I try to apply the normal start-up.
There is another way to install Windows 10, it might work for you guys. I was using the DVD ISO image which kept failing. Man thank you so much. I spent my entire Sunday on this fucking piece of crap but finally I got windows Followed your steps exactly. Chant "Epis Failuris" repeatedly during the eighth download of the update.
Then go out and buy an iPad. Straight up on like my 30th install attempt now. When I check Update History I see it gives me the code I am absolutely stumped. The reason it was failing was because I had redirected my program files to my HDD, to get it off of my much smaller SSD. I had to go in the registry and set it back to normal. I had to reinstall. Seen loads of people having random issues with 10, teething problems for the most part probably but still.
That worked for me to get it on windows update but the Media creation tool still gives me the something happened error. You guys might try making a new user account on your computers which is Administrator and then try the steps above again. You click the SKIP button. Future reinstalls of Windows 10 can be done by booting for the Windows 10 DVD or USB stick you made. Yes as the computer will reboot and read it during install.
You could go the USB install route though. I ran into the "Something Happened" error once. I rebooted and tried the "Media Creation Tool" again and it worked. In between these, the BT folder comes back. So when I have the BT folder, I get the something happened error. When I delete the BT folder and try, the window just closes. Are you sure you disabled all the services in msconfig other than the Microsoft ones and rebooted when told to? After you delete C: I delete the BT.
Then I try to run to MC Tool. But it closes on me when I select "Install Win 10" or whatever. First off make sure you are using an Administrator account. Delete the BT folder once again. The BT folder will be recreated by the tool so this is normal. Do the Create installation media for another PC option and save as an.
If I choose upgrade now the window closes, if I choose to create an install disk I get "something happened". So I got it to the point where it would download the files but then it would fail when verifying the download. Does it have to be an. After that it was working for me. Nope to get the tool rolling, just enable and start both BITS service and Windows Update Service.
Enable, and START both services. Tried four times with all steps, checking everything twice, nothing works, something happened, going back to Ubuntu for a month. This did not work, I am super pissed right now. I am trying from like 30 hours. I did everything that is on internet. Either I get some kind of damn error or it says something happened.
This is pissing me off. If I try the the media creation tool. Then it says something happened, Windows 10 installation have failed. Someone please help me. That is exactly where my install was failing until I did this fix. You were able to sign up for the free upgrade right? Your Windows license is valid? Make sure you are using an Administrator account. This fix worked for me!! As another redditor pointed out, there is actually more than one "Something Happened" error.
This fix from the OP is related to the error that happens during the installation and a small grey box titled "Something Happened" pops up and the installation stops. After getting the "Something Happened" message. That should read "nothing happened", I followed steps 1 through 5 only but stopped there and retried MediaCreationToolx I forced a download of the MediaCreationToolx64 but it would fail with the "Something Happened" error over and over.
After reading the 13 steps and many of the comments I decided to try the upgrade from this point [after step 5]. My laptop was already backed up so if something went wrong I could use windows restore function or third party EaseUS Goback to restore it. Tried everything mentioned in the first post. Something happened crap message all the time. Tired of this MS crap. Coming from Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Already changed to en-us locale. Removed my Dutch language pack and did the above.
And I am not going to do a clean install. This is my work PC. Way, way, way to much work. Not just language, but you also sat date format and keyboard to US English? It might not hurt to do a full CHKDSK just to be safe.
Some other users have reported that doing the first option in the Media Creation Tool to upgrade worked for them instead of doing the.
ISO file with the second option. Same as DVD ofcourse. Installed the iso onto the USB stick through Mediacreation crap tool and alse on a 2nd attempt by creating an ISO and installing the ISO with rufus on the USB stick. So, as mentioned before, I tried it all Sick and tired of MS crap. After reading the 13 steps and many of the comments I decided to try the upgrade from this point [steps 1 thru 5 and then and then run mediacreationtoolx64].
I found this after trial and error that you need around 13GB of free space on the C: Drive in order for it to install. You can also do a Disk Cleanup to remove temp stuff. Also good to note, since it comes with 32GB SSD, space is at a premium and after the upgrade, the previous Windows installation files are on there.
You can remove these via Disk Cleanup after the upgrade and get your space back. Lastly, found a reboot after the upgrade helped download Store Apps better. That seemed to lock up a bit after the upgrade, but a simple reboot fixed that. One thing I noticed is when I disable everything in msconfig and click apply, my Bitdefender AV re-enables its self and keeps running. I do have it disabled though in the software. Not sure if I have to uninstall it or what.
Do you have installed hyper-v? I found out that problem was that wim-image could not be mounted. So before closing "something happened" box I copied the wim image created by windows10 updater and tried to map it manually using DISM. But I always got Error 3: Path not found although path was correctly. I googled a lot and it seems hyper-v installation did mess up DISM configuration. But there is an alternative DISM available though the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit Windows ADK.
Downloaded this and only installed DISM tools. Error 58 or so similar to error 3. But I did remember some guy said, after uninstalling ADK and NOT REBOOTING it did work again. So tried that and BINGO: So unmounted image and started setup of WIN10 and BINGO!!! I actually had an issue where I got the "something happened" where I had downloaded the ISO for Windows Home the default on the media creation tool startup screenand then tried to run it on a Windows 7 Pro laptop.
Going to try rerunning it with the proper version now. Thank you to the poster who mentioned a corrupt MBR. I had been trying for 2 days unsuccessfully - I tried all the fixes above but nothing worked. I finally decided to download Easy BCD as mentioned above and I had a corrupt BCD! I know nothing about these things so it was a swift learning curve When I tried again to upgrade to W10 via my USB it all went on without a hitch. I followed it with a fresh install.
I hope this helps other people. Not sure how this is working for anyone. Once I get to step 10 it asks for a product key. I am on Windows 8. No error message just popped away. For all guys, that STILL have this error I encountered this problem when using the Media Creation Tool to upgrade an "ASUS DeskTop PC CM" from OEM Windows 7 Home Premium bit.
I tried a direct upgrade using the MCT tool and also burning an ISO to a DVD. I tried upgrading through Windows Update. I would get the small popup window version of "Something Happened: Windows 10 Installation has failed" when using the MCT upgrade option or MCT-created DVD. The Windows Update option would usually proceed to the first reboot to begin installation and immediately boot back into Windows 7. I would see errors such as or in the logs. I was beginning to think that my dual boot configuration was causing problems Ubuntu One problem was found and fixed bad clusters in BOOTSTAT.
The next attempt to upgrade using Windows Update was successful. I hope this helps others. I think some better error messages from the upgrade process could have been helpful.
I should probably replace this hard drive. Assumed it had something to do with my BCD being messed up from having other partitions and OS installed, but was wrong. I lost power while my desktop was downloading the free upgrade, and after that it took me several days to finally get Windows 10 to successfully install.
I was upgrading from Windows 7 Pro bit. I did a number of things, but what i think sealed the deal was a chkdsk. I right-clicked on the C drive, went to the Tools tab and checked the disk for errors, including bad sectors. After a reboot, i deleted the temporary files under C: I performed the upgrade from a DVD that i created with the Media Creation Tool. Note that the Region and Language "fix" that works for most people did not work for me.
Nor did simply deleting the temp files. Nor did opening the command prompt as admin and forcing the update. The only thing that worked was a chkdsk. This fix worked for me and I tried doing every other thing out there. I was getting the smaller grey "something happened" error. After doing the clean install of Windows 8 and then immediately upgrading it worked like a charm!
Failed to mount WIM file C: I had the exact same error trying to upgrade Windows 8. I just copied DISM folder from this location C: Just wanted to Say that for me, working in a domain environment our updates are managed via a "Windows Server Update Manager" on our server so we can choose what updates to roll out to our machines.

I think there maybe times it downloads a bad version using ISO. One more of many fixes. Took me two months to realize all I had to do was rename the computer and the install worked fine with no issues. Upgrading failed every time. I must have tried 15 times. Someone mentioned about having a language pack installed, blah blah. None of that worked. This is no longer true. Frustrated with the upgrade issues, I called Microsoft. I got an Indian sounding woman on the phone, but the call was clear and she quickly helped me.
She told me they made an update to Windows 10 ISO. I am not sure of the build number, but she told me it was recently updated and that now you can do a clean install. I was a little scared to trust what she said, but I thought what the heck. Saved my data, used Magic Jellybean to find my key, and ran the ISO on a flash drive and never looked back. Install was smooth with no issues.
First thing I did after installing Chrome and Avast was to install Classic Shell, which gives the start menu a Windows 7 look. The main reason I wanted to update is because my Corsair headset was only being recognized as 2 channel in Windows 7. In Windows 10 it works perfect. Mount WIM file C: Tried a lot but it always breaks at this mounting error. Procmon trace shows that the windows 10 upgrade process setuphost. Is this a bug in the installer?
Installed new AIK, different wimmount. As workaround I tried even to make C: Still get the stupid small window version of "Something Happened. Hopefully that is not the case, but it is plausible as you are allowed 30 days to revert back which you did. Doing the instructions in the OP again, instead of saving the.
